How We Grade and Inspect Used Devices

This used device grading guide explains what happens to every pre-owned phone, tablet and gadget before it goes on sale at Gadget Canada, what each grade means and how to read a used listing. Every used device is inspected by Gadget Canada, graded on its cosmetic condition and backed by a 90-day limited warranty, so you know what you’re getting before you order.

Used device grading guide: the four grades

Our grades describe cosmetic condition. They don’t describe performance: every used device gets the same full function test, whatever its grade.

Each listing adds notes on the specific marks on that unit, such as where a scuff is or whether the screen has any scratches, so you’re not relying on the grade alone.

Our inspection checklist

Every used device goes through the same steps before it’s listed:

1. Full function test: we check that the device’s features and controls work as they should.
2. Factory reset: all personal data and accounts are removed.
3. IMEI check (phones): the IMEI is checked against Canada’s lost and stolen blacklist.
4. Battery health (phones and tablets): at least 80%, with the exact figure listed when it can be measured.
5. Cleaning: the device is cleaned before it’s packed.
6. Grading: we assign one of the four grades and describe any marks on the listing.

Battery health explained

Battery health is the amount of charge a rechargeable battery can hold now, shown as a percentage of what it held when new. Lithium-ion batteries lose capacity gradually with charge cycles and age, which is normal for any phone or tablet. Every used phone and tablet we sell has at least 80% battery health, and we list the exact figure when it can be measured. The 80% minimum applies to phones and tablets, so listings for other devices, such as watches and headphones, may not show a battery figure.

Data wipe and account removal

Every used device is factory reset with all personal data and accounts removed before it’s listed. That protects the previous owner’s privacy, and it means the device isn’t tied to their account. On Android phones and tablets, a security feature often called Factory Reset Protection can keep a reset device locked to the last account signed in to it. Because accounts are removed, you can set the device up with your own.

IMEI check for phones

An IMEI is a unique identifier assigned to every phone, and you can display it by dialling *#06#. Before a used phone is listed, we check its IMEI against Canada’s lost and stolen blacklist using the CWTA Device Check. Canadian carriers can block a phone that’s been reported lost or stolen, so this check helps protect you from buying one. It doesn’t confirm network compatibility, though: used phones are sold unlocked, and you should still confirm with Bell, Rogers, TELUS, Freedom, Videotron or your carrier that the model works on your plan.

What’s included

Used items come with the device and a compatible charging cable unless the listing says otherwise. The original box and accessories aren’t guaranteed. Some listings include more: our used Xiaomi Pad 8 Pro comes with its original box, and our used 55-inch Mini LED TV includes stand feet, a remote and a power cable. Always check the included items on the listing before you order.

The 90-day warranty

Every used device is covered by a 90-day limited warranty from Gadget Canada. It covers defects that show up during normal use. It doesn’t cover accidental damage, misuse or the cosmetic wear described by the device’s grade and listing notes. New items keep our 1-year limited warranty. Returns

Used items have the same 30-day return window as new items, counted from delivery. The item must come back in the same condition you received it, with everything that was included. Our returns and refunds policy explains how to start a return.

How to read a used listing

1. Grade: shown in the product name, as in Used REDMI Note 17 Pro 5G – Excellent.
2. Cosmetic notes: where any marks are and whether the screen is affected.
3. Battery health: for phones and tablets, the measured percentage, which is always at least 80%.
4. Included items: exactly what comes with the device.
5. Unlocked status: used phones are sold unlocked. Confirm carrier compatibility before you buy.
6. Compare with new: check the same model in our new section to weigh the savings against a sealed box and the 1-year limited warranty.
