Open box: the packaging has been opened. Every item is inspected, tested and covered by a 90-day warranty. How we grade
Buying open box furniture Canada-wide: what it means
Open box means the packaging has been opened, so the piece can't be sold as sealed-new: it might be a customer return or a carton opened in transit. Before listing, we inspect each item, check what's in the box and make sure moving parts such as drawers, doors, hinges and lids work, then clean and grade it.
Why it costs less
An opened box changes the price far more than the furniture. Since the item can't be sold as new, and some pieces have a light mark or no original carton, open box pieces are typically priced below the same item sealed. A usable sofa or table also ends up in a home instead of a landfill.
Reading the grade, photos and listing notes
A grade describes appearance only, from Like New (no visible signs of use) through Excellent and Good to Fair (noticeable cosmetic wear). The open box grading guide explains how we assign them. Then look closer:
- Where the mark is: a scuff on the back of a sofa against a wall, or under a tabletop, may never show. One on a seat cushion or the top surface will.
- What's included: check the notes for hardware, legs, shelves, instructions and the original box.
- Colour and finish: screens vary, so read the colour and material in the description too.
- Anything unclear: email support@gadgetcanada.ca with the listing name before you order.
Measure the route and plan the room
Measuring matters even more with open box: a return must come back in the condition it arrived, and a fresh scrape from a tight door frame counts against that. Check door openings, hallway turns, stair width and headroom, and your elevator's door and cab against the listing.
Sofas
Count everyday seats: a loveseat for two, a standard sofa for about three, a sectional for more. Favour a deeper seat if you like to curl up, and keep a clear path around it.
Tables
A round table makes the most of a compact square room, a rectangle or oval fits a long one, and every chair needs room behind it to pull out.
Materials, care and small marks
Most light marks are easy to live with or fix. A touch-up marker matched to the finish can blend a fine scratch on wood or veneer; metal and glass usually need only a soft cloth and a non-abrasive cleaner; on upholstery, check the cleaning code on the label (W, S, W/S or X) before treating a spot. Save any touch-up until you've decided to keep the piece, since returns must come back as you received them.
Small spaces and home essentials
In a condo or apartment, an open box loveseat, drop-leaf table or storage piece with drawers stretches both your budget and your floor space. For trash cans, match the litres to the room: around 30 to 50 L with a pedal or sensor lid for most kitchens, a small lidded can for the bathroom. The notes describe any dent or scuff, and the lid, pedal or sensor is checked before listing.
Furnishing a basement? Damp air can be hard on wood and fabric, and a dehumidifier from Open Box Home Appliances may help keep humidity in check.
Warranty, returns and delivery
Open box furniture and home items carry a 90-day limited warranty against manufacturing defects; cosmetic wear described by the grade and listing notes isn't covered. You can return an item within 30 days from delivery in the same condition you received it, with everything included; see returns and refunds. Large items follow our shipping policy, and if your delivery involves stairs or building access, email us before ordering.

Open Box Furniture & Home: frequently asked questions
What does open box mean for furniture?
It means the packaging has been opened, for example because a customer returned the item or the box was opened in transit, so it can't be sold as sealed-new. Every piece is inspected, cleaned and graded before it's listed, and it may show minor cosmetic marks that the grade and listing notes describe.
How can I tell what condition an item is in?
Start with its grade: Like New, Excellent, Good or Fair, ranging from no visible signs of use to noticeable cosmetic wear. Then read the listing notes and look at the photos to see what any marks are and where they sit. If something isn't clear, email support@gadgetcanada.ca before ordering.
Will all the parts and hardware be included?
We check what's in the box when we inspect each item, and the listing describes what's included, such as hardware, instructions or the original carton. If a part you need isn't mentioned, ask us before you order.
What warranty and returns come with open box furniture?
Each item carries a 90-day limited warranty from Gadget Canada against manufacturing defects. Cosmetic wear described by its grade and listing notes isn't covered. You can also return it within 30 days from delivery, as long as it comes back in the same condition you received it, with everything that was included.
How is open box furniture shipped?
Large items follow our shipping policy, and the shipping charge is shown at checkout before you pay. If getting the piece inside means stairs, a walk-up or building rules, write to support@gadgetcanada.ca before you order. We answer Monday–Friday, 9:00–17:00 ET.
